Tokamak Energy registers as legal entity in Japan to expand global operations

Tokamak Energy has strengthened its long-standing relationship with Japan by registering as a legal entity in Tokyo.

As part of its global ‘Fusion for All’ mission, Tokamak Energy has now incorporated a subsidiary company in Japan, Tokamak Energy K.K., with an office for Japanese operations in the capital city.

Tokamak Energy has built a wide network of government, commercial, scientific and academic partners in Japan in recent years, including with strategic investor Furukawa Electric, the University of Tokyo, Kyoto Fusioneering and Sumitomo Corporation.

The company is also part of Japan’s FAST (Fusion by Advanced Superconducting Tokamak) project which aims to achieve fusion-based power generation in the 2030s.

Ross Morgan, Tokamak Energy’s Director of Strategic Partnerships, said: “We have firm ambitions to establish Tokamak Energy K.K. as a leading high technology business in Japan for fusion energy and our transformative high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. Japan expects to achieve its future energy needs through fusion, and we are here to help make that happen. This is a proud moment for the company and the start of a new chapter for our growing, global business.”

FAST is a private-sector-led collaboration between industry and academia, led by Kyoto Fusioneering with support from experts in Japan and around the world. The project fits with the Japanese Government’s ‘Fusion Energy Innovation Strategy’, which sets a road map to commercialise fusion and achieve its decarbonisation goals.

Tokamak Energy was founded in 2009 as a spin-off from UK Atomic Energy Authority and is headquartered near Oxford, UK. The company’s U.S. subsidiary, Tokamak Energy Inc., was established in 2019 and is one of eight companies selected by the Department of Energy for an award as part of its Milestone Program, a key aspect of the bold decadal vision for delivering commercial fusion.

Born from a world-class fusion energy mission, Tokamak Energy’s new business division TE Magnetics is leading the development and deployment of HTS magnets. In collaboration with key manufacturing partners, it aims to become the leading supplier of HTS technology for applications including science, fusion, renewable energy and water, land, air and space propulsion.
