Tokamak Energy wins LIBRTI fusion fuel programme bid

Tokamak Energy has won a bid to advance fusion development under UK Atomic Energy Authority’s £200 million Lithium Breeding Tritium Innovation (LIBRTI) programme.

Part of the UK Government’s Fusion Futures initiative, LIBRTI focuses on pioneering fusion fuel advancements and stimulating the industry on the path to clean and limitless energy.

Over its four-year span, the programme aims to demonstrate controlled tritium breeding, a critical step for future fusion power plants.

Tokamak Energy, in partnership with University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and University of Birmingham, will conduct a range of lithium impurity, diagnostic and modelling experiments to help UKAEA advance tritium breeding technologies as part of the programme.

It is one of 12 experimental and digital projects expected to run to March 2026.
