Tokamak Energy has appointed Paul Buddin as its new Chief Financial Officer, strengthening the leadership team while the company scales the commercial deployment of its high temperature superconducting (HTS) technology.
Paul brings more than 15 years’ experience as a senior finance leader in advanced engineering and manufacturing businesses, with a track record of financing new production capacity and taking complex technology to global markets.
He spent 11 years at McLaren, rising from Financial Controller to Group CFO. During that time the automotive business grew from £6m to £1.25bn turnover. The growth included opening two new factories and building international sales operations in the U.S., China, Singapore and Spain.
As Group CFO, Paul led funding of more than £1.5bn in equity and debt, including a £563m debut bond, and guided the group through the COVID-19 pandemic. He was most recently CFO at Cambria Investments Holdings, a privately owned diversified organisation focused on automotive retail and property investment.
Warrick Matthews, Tokamak Energy CEO, said: “Paul has built and financed manufacturing businesses through rapid growth, which is exactly the experience we need as we bring our HTS technology to market. With a physics background, he understands the technology and the opportunity it creates across energy, industry and science. He will play a central role as we expand our superconducting magnet and manufacturing capabilities and grow our customer base worldwide.”
Paul began his career at KPMG and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. He holds a first-class master’s degree in physics from the University of Bath and worked as a technical student at CERN in Geneva.
Paul Buddin, CFO, said: “High temperature superconductors have the potential to transform how we generate, transmit and use power, and Tokamak Energy has the technology, expertise and manufacturing capability to lead that market. I’m looking forward to working with the team to secure the investment and partnerships that will unlock the power of our HTS systems to customers around the world.”
Tokamak Energy recently completed a world-leading fusion magnet system test campaign, validating its technology for commercial HTS systems. Earlier this year, the company was named Magnet Systems Partner for the UK’s STEP Fusion programme and advanced its collaboration with Furukawa Electric on UK HTS tape capability.
Through TE Magnetics, Tokamak Energy develops HTS magnet and power systems for applications including data centres, fusion energy, scientific research, medical and advanced transportation. HTS magnets generate powerful, efficient magnetic fields in a compact footprint and require significantly less energy than conventional systems.
Its Ridgway Machines business, acquired in 2025, builds precision production equipment for the superconducting, electrical and energy sectors, strengthening the supply chain needed for HTS at scale.
Tokamak Energy, founded in 2009 as a spin-off from UK Atomic Energy Authority, also delivers fusion energy technologies, expertise and test facilities to national programmes.
