MP Launches Tokamak Energy’s First STEM Outreach Programme

Wantage MP David Johnston has launched Tokamak Energy’s first STEM outreach programme to help inspire the next generation of fusion energy scientists and engineers.

Almost a quarter of the Milton Park-based company’s employees have already signed-up to bring the power of the sun and stars to the classroom.

The volunteers will be working with STEM Learning (an organisation dedicated to improving young people’s lives through the power of science, technology, engineering and maths), the Milton Park Engagement Group and Oxford Advanced Skills to roll-out the programme to schools and groups across the region.

Tokamak Energy is a rapidly growing commercial fusion energy company aiming to demonstrate grid-ready, clean, safe and limitless power in the early 2030s.

Mr Johnston MP said: “I am delighted to launch Tokamak Energy’s STEM outreach programme which will link one of Britain’s most exciting, and fast-growing employers directly with our schools. Tokamak Energy is leading the way globally on commercialising fusion energy which will be a crucial part of the next generation’s net zero energy future.”

Chris Kelsall, Tokamak Energy CEO, added: “It was an honour to welcome David Johnston MP to Tokamak Energy to launch our first STEM outreach programme. We’re extremely proud our team is so enthused by this new opportunity to inspire the next generation. Young people will be fascinated by our mission to recreate the power of the sun and stars on Earth, delivering an affordable and readily available clean energy source for all.”

Tokamak Energy has identified a range of activities for its 2023 STEM outreach programme. They include technical demonstrations, career focused learning and mentoring, presentations, and tours to see some of the technology and equipment needed to achieve sustainable fusion energy.

All Tokamak Energy employees are given the opportunity to dedicate one day each year to STEM outreach or other charity work. Any schools or organisations interested in finding out more information can email STEM@tokamakenergy.com.
